Welcome to We Move Together.

Michael Head Shot

Note: After a year or so of writing this blog with a focus on leadership and organizational effectiveness, I feel the need to adapt and grow.  While I will still focus on leadership and organizational topics, our world is so complex and simple, funny and sad.  There are endless topics to explore.  We learn and grow each day.

As the line goes, “life would be easy if not for all the other people”.  Let’s work to turn that around and say, “life is easier when WeMoveTogether”.

My name is Michael Hurley.  I have been thinking and living leadership for many years.  With this blog I will present my own thoughts, ideas and random musings along with the best on leadership from business, sports, great thinkers, history, and society in general.  You know the drill – my blog posts are my own thoughts and do not represent my employer.  So if you like what you read, I did good.  If you do not like what you read, well still me.

Why a blog on leadership? At its essence Leadership is a process of influence.  Great leaders move the world around them and have influence to bring true change.  The change can be a big item such as introducing a new product or something much smaller with a single person influencing a group of people to bring their all to a task at hand.  While my focus is more on leadership in business, one can argue that effective leadership has never been more important, and sadly lacking, in society (yep government) in general.  I do not plan to touch that third rail called politics, but let’s see.

This blog will aid me in my journey to become a leader of consequence.  For those who come across this blog, I trust you are searching to be a better leader.  Together we move together.    Why the title of “We Move Together”?  For me a key component of leadership is movement.  We are here and need to go there.  By the way, where is there?   In graduate school I had to create a leadership model.  I was drawn to the concept of push and pull and the key need to focus on the “pull” for effective leadership.  An effective leader is out in front pulling people forward.

Before a business career, I studied Anthropology and was a college athlete.  Both of these passions have influenced me as a leader in ways that I have only figured out later in life as I reflect on my influences.  In fact my first experiences as a leader involved athletics.  I will touch on my experiences as a member of a crew team (rowing) which provides interesting food for thought on the interplay of extreme teamwork and the glue of leadership to bring it all together.  With my anthropology studies I learned the importance of a holistic view to situations.  I plan to dive deep into the concepts of anthropology as a key source for leadership development.

I hold a master’s degree in Organizational Development and Behavior.  Leadership development was a key component of my studies.  I have been successful with leadership development within my organization both as an HR professional and working in operational management.  Once again let me share myself through this blog.  My dearest hope is that I will connect with others as we discuss leadership.  Together we will move together and just maybe find ways to influence the larger world.

    • David – thank you so much. I just read your one year post and it inspired me. You were one of the first blogs I connected with and do continue to post. I will do the same. We do have a great community.
